This collection starts in 1910, just two years after Ohio began issuing plates at all, and runs straight through 1974, right up until Ohio switched over to the sticker system. Sixty-five years of plates, gathered one at a time by a family that clearly enjoyed the hunt as much as the having.
Walking the run top to bottom is like watching the state change. The early porcelain-style plates give way to embossed steel. The war years show up in the details — single plates instead of pairs, thinner metal, the kind of small compromises that happened when steel was needed elsewhere. The hand-painted county codes and oddball fonts of the '30s. The gradual shift toward the plates most people would actually recognize by the '60s and '70s.
There are only two years missing from the sequence — 1943 and 1952 — and they're missing for a good reason: Ohio never made a standalone plate either year. Metal was tight both times, once for WWII and once for the Korean War, so the state just revalidated the previous year's plate with a windshield sticker instead of stamping a new one. There's nothing to find for those two years because nothing was ever made. Everything else, Ohio actually produced, is here.
It's a neat thing to see hanging together like this — not just old metal, but a pretty complete little timeline of the state, built plate by plate by someone who clearly cared about finishing the job.
